Lump sum payments are payments from one party to another, based on the length of marriage. The lump sum payment clause was designed primarily as an option for couples where one spouse intends to leave their job and stay home with children or a sick family member. The idea being, lump sum payments would even out potential loss of income from those years. Of course, this is not the only way couples use this clause.
